NEW VIDEO FROM TESTAMENT

Published in News

The American thrashers released a new video for their song "The Pale King" from their recent 11th album, "Brotherhood Of The Snake". Guitarist Eric Peterson said: “Secret societies, unknown other worlds, and superstitions mark this, our 13th music video. We wanted to do a band performance video with abstract ancient alien visuals, which we are set in. I think it's easily one of our best so far, and it was a lot of fun to make and work with Nuclear Bast recent newcomer, director Tommy Jones.”

TESTAMENT singer Chuck Billy was interviewed on a recent edition of "Whiplash", the KLOS radio show hosted by Full Metal Jackie.
Asked how the more difficult songwriting process for TESTAMENT's latest album, 2016's "Brotherhood Of The Snake", forced him to ultimately become better at what he does, Chuck said: "Well, I think it was more of from the gut reaction to the songs, because by the time we got into the studio, the songs weren't even completed yet. Whatever was going on, me and Eric [Peterson, guitar] had been working on that record for, it seemed like, at least two years, and over the two years, I felt we should have been moving along, the process along, a lot quicker. So, you know, there was a little frustration and anger and a little stuff going into the recording of the record, and I think maybe on everybody's part, because everybody kind of went in blindfolded just with the riffs and parts of the songs. But once we got in there, I think just maybe the pressure of having… you know, the pressure's on and kind of just going with your gut feeling maybe just drove everybody over the edge a little bit just to get a little more creative and just… And, fortunately, we have guys like Gene Hoglan [drums] and Steve DiGiorgio [bass] playing, and they did a great job on it and tore it up. But, you know, I think at the end of the day, the product that finally came out, especially for the mix and song-wise, the songs really did come together, and what Eric ended up having, [which was] a lot of parts, I ended up listening to what they were. I just kind of worked around it where a lot of the time I'm really the one with Eric trying to change stuff and, 'I'm gonna sing over this riff and that.' And this one, I just said, 'Just go for it right now, and I'll just jump in and do what I do.' And it all really came together by taking that approach and just kind of going for it. The record, I felt, is probably some of the strongest material we wrote in a while."

BEST OF THE BEST 2016

Published in WILDSIDE

It’s usual at the end of each year to make a review, a flashback of the previous 365 days. In a year with many great losses for the rock and metal world there were some moments that stood out that of course are not the same for everyone of us. Below, Rockpages.gr team tackles the painful task to come up with the absolute best ten albums and the gig of the year in Greek soil. The lists are all over the place, titles get written and then deleted while everyone is trying to appreciate their impressions and memories…

Finally, just for the shake of a top 10 we rate the editors’ choices with the Eurovision system (No.1=12 points, No.2=11 points and so on) in order to have the final ranking. However, you shouldn’t pay too much attention to numbers, the posirions and the ranking. What matters above all is music! Happy New Year!

1.    Metallica – Hardwired…To Self-Destruct

The band’s performance is flawless and despite the fact that Hammett hasn’t written a single note on “Hardwired…”, he absolutely shines on the album as his guitar solos are undoubtedly impressive. Another characteristic of “Hardwired…” is the fact that there are many scattered guitar riffs throughout the album that sometimes “save” an indifferent tune like “Halo On Fire” as after the 3.00 mark, the song is transformed into a sonic juggernaut due to Hetfield’s and Hammett’s awesome guitar work.

2.    Fates Warning – “Theories Of Flight”

The first thing that is really striking with “Theories…” is the up-tempo character of the majorities of the songs and their aggressive attitude; something quite unusual for Fates Warning. Also, there is a clear optimistic mood and a sense of escapism in most of the tracks while the familiar (for Fates Warning) melancholic climate is present in the majestic prog opus of “The Ghosts of Home”. Ray Alder is perfect behind the mic, Bobby Zarzombek is as stomping as ever on the drums, Joey Vera is tight and groovy as ever while Jim Matheos is flawless and unique. Frank Aresti’s presence is small and discreet…yet always significant!

3.    Rotting Christ – Rituals

It is obvious that on this album, more so than ever before, mainman Sakis Tolis prioritized and emphasized on the vibe of each individual composition, to the point of ‘sacrificing’ some of the band’s classic traits in order to accomplish a personal, esoteric vision. ‘Rituals’ is a rewarding result. How many bands can successfully incorporate Euripides, Blake and Baudelaire in their music? What other artist pays tribute to important parts of Greek musical heritage the way Sakis does in ‘Tou Thanatoy’ and ‘The Four Horsemen’?

 4.    Anthrax - For All Kings

“For All Kings” carries on really where “Worship Music” stopped but it is enriched with some modern traces here and there while the pure thrash moments are considerably fewer in number. The albums opens with quite possible the best cut which is called “You Gotta Believe” and it reminds of the good old days. This is classic Anthrax at its very best. The follow up “Monster At The End” might not be of the same caliber or quality level but nevertheless is a remarkable moments which shows Anthrax borrowing influence by Disturbed (in the verse) and late Machine Head (at the chorus).

 5.    Testament - Brotherhood Of The Snake

Californians thrashers are back fiercely after an absence of four years. Modern relentless thrash metal and I have the impression that the degree of technical complexity has increased in the compositions, and this is easy to understand when in the lineup super players like DiGiorgio and Gene Hoglan are involved.

 6.    Opeth – Sorceress

It would be bizarre, if an artist with such an array of influences and a taste as eclectic as Mikael Åkerfeldt’s would keep on making the same type of music, insisting, among other things, on singing in a very specific and restrictive style. Furthermore, no one could ever accuse him of not having explored or evolved the irresistible progressive – death metal combination that made Opeth famous, in the fullest degree.

 7.    Innerwish- “Innerwish”

It is a complete work with a perfectly clean and "full" production.  "InnerWish" follows the classic stamp/sound that the band has outlined throughout the years and manages to "walk" into new territories such is heavier style and Epic tunes. My personal opinion, is that the band has made the correct choice with Giorgos as his voice matched the bands' new musical direction.

 8.    Avantasia – Ghostlights

Every time Tobias Sammet gets ready to unleash a new studio album with Avantasia, there is naturally a buzz in the metal community as it’s not that often nowadays to be treated with such prestigious releases that feature a parade of special guest stars.

 9.    Gojira – Magma

After 2012’s amazing ‘L’Enfant Sauvage’, brothers Duplantier took their time, and, now living in Brooklyn, searched – and found as it turns out – the way to make their music a little more accessible without sacrificing its particularities. Their mother passed away during the writing process for the new record, and this has given an even more powerful sentimental substance to ‘Magma’.

Romanos Terzis

 GojiraMagma

 10.    Helstar - Vampiro

Helstar’s trademark power/thrash outbursts are wonderfully blended with a technical atmosphere that is not tiring at all and takes “Vampiro” to another, higher level! The presence of two new members –Andrew Atwood on guitar and Garrick Smith on bass- has breathed new air to the band while Helstar’s founders Larry Barragan and James Rivera are having the time of their life with the latter being right at home with the whole vampire theme of the album.

TESTAMENT'S TOUGH YEARS

Published in News

Chuck Billy admitted in a brand new interview that things were tough for Testament in the 90s and early 00s:
"When we first started, the original members were equal members, and then once we had the breakup, that's when me and Eric [Peterson, guitar] started the label and the company that we have been working as. So right now, it's just always been me and Eric. When the guys left, Alex [Skolnick, guitar] came back, I think, after fourteen years, and, I think, Greg [Christian, bass] after eight or nine. You know, so me and Eric have been holding the fort and kind of riding the wave with the ups and downs of the business, really. The '90s and the early 2000s were really tough for us as a metal band. Major labels, at that point, were really starting to drop a lot of metal bands and the radio industry wasn't playing metal very much on the radio anymore. I remember at that point, especially working with Atlantic, they were really pushing our singles, and there were at least close to two hundred stations across the U.S. that would play heavy metal in drivetime traffic, which was pretty unusual. And then that just kind of changed overnight; it was just gone and metal was off the charts, off everything — I mean, it was just insane what happened. And for us, unfortunately, we were at that period of our career where Alex was leaving the band, and Louie [Clemente, drums] left the band right before that. And things were kind of at the end for the band, the original band, at that point, and times were changing, music was changing, and it was the end of the record contract. Everything was happening at that point."

San Francisco Bay Area thrashers TESTAMENT have tapped drummer

Vocalist Chuck Billy of San Francisco Bay Area metallers TESTAMENT has confirmed that the band's forthcoming eleventh studio album will "definitely" be titled "The Brotherhood Of The Snake".
Speaking to TheNationalStudent about the lyrical themes covered on TESTAMENT's follow-up to 2012's "Dark Roots Of Earth", Chuck said: "'The Brotherhood Of The Snake' was actually a society about six thousand years ago that debarred all religions. It was just a fascinating topic that caught our eye and attention and spawned a lot of songs. We're going with that vibe."

ROB DUKES VS CHUCK BILLY

Published in News

Former EXODUS frontman Rob Dukes was interviewed by rock journalist

Έχοντας κάνει ένα εντυπωσιακό come back από το 2008 με τα “The Formation Of Damnation” και “Dark Roots Of Earth” οι Αμερικανοί thrashers μας παρουσιάζουν ζωντανά τους Testament του σήμερα. Ποιοί είναι αυτοί; Είναι οι Testament της πρώτης περιόδου και βασικά μέχρι τα μέσα της δεκαετίας του '90, με την προσθήκη της εμπειρείας και της απόλυτης ωρίμανσης.

Is there a better way to spend a freezing Tuesday night than attending a Testament live gig inside the Gagarin club? Of course not! So more than 1000 metalheads didn’t waste the rare chance to witness one of the greatest thrash metal bands of all time performing live and filled the place ahead of schedule. Karma Violens didn’t miss the chance to show its fangs to the crowd. It’s definitely a group of global standards. The band was tight and all members in constant motion with the sound as a valuable ally. Their extreme a-la Machine Head metal is very demanding in terms of sound engineering and can be very punishing if not directed properly through the speakers of any venue.
