Innerwish long time absence from the live stages of Greece's capital came to an end on Saturday November the 5th. Their superb new album just couldn't be left without a live presentation in front of the city's audience, so the band put its best effort to make a night ot remember. The venue choice seemed ideal as the attendance was expected big.

Now that the effect of the Cretan sun combined with the summer vacations starts to wear off, I believe I can try to write some words concerning the best Rock and Metal festival of Greece. Yes, it’s that simple. Chania Rock Festival has become the best one of its kind and that is because of the combination of various reasons. Location, organization and participating bands. The decision to move the festival inside the San Salvatore bastion 4 years ago, was a total winner.

It’s usual at the end of each year to make a review, a flashback of the previous 365 days. In a year with many great losses for the rock and metal world there were some moments that stood out that of course are not the same for everyone of us. Below, team tackles the painful task to come up with the absolute best ten albums and the gig of the year in Greek soil. The lists are all over the place, titles get written and then deleted while everyone is trying to appreciate their impressions and memories…

Finally, just for the shake of a top 10 we rate the editors’ choices with the Eurovision system (No.1=12 points, No.2=11 points and so on) in order to have the final ranking. However, you shouldn’t pay too much attention to numbers, the posirions and the ranking. What matters above all is music! Happy New Year!

1.    Metallica – Hardwired…To Self-Destruct

The band’s performance is flawless and despite the fact that Hammett hasn’t written a single note on “Hardwired…”, he absolutely shines on the album as his guitar solos are undoubtedly impressive. Another characteristic of “Hardwired…” is the fact that there are many scattered guitar riffs throughout the album that sometimes “save” an indifferent tune like “Halo On Fire” as after the 3.00 mark, the song is transformed into a sonic juggernaut due to Hetfield’s and Hammett’s awesome guitar work.

2.    Fates Warning – “Theories Of Flight”

The first thing that is really striking with “Theories…” is the up-tempo character of the majorities of the songs and their aggressive attitude; something quite unusual for Fates Warning. Also, there is a clear optimistic mood and a sense of escapism in most of the tracks while the familiar (for Fates Warning) melancholic climate is present in the majestic prog opus of “The Ghosts of Home”. Ray Alder is perfect behind the mic, Bobby Zarzombek is as stomping as ever on the drums, Joey Vera is tight and groovy as ever while Jim Matheos is flawless and unique. Frank Aresti’s presence is small and discreet…yet always significant!

Sakis Nikas

3.    Rotting Christ – Rituals

It is obvious that on this album, more so than ever before, mainman Sakis Tolis prioritized and emphasized on the vibe of each individual composition, to the point of ‘sacrificing’ some of the band’s classic traits in order to accomplish a personal, esoteric vision. ‘Rituals’ is a rewarding result. How many bands can successfully incorporate Euripides, Blake and Baudelaire in their music? What other artist pays tribute to important parts of Greek musical heritage the way Sakis does in ‘Tou Thanatoy’ and ‘The Four Horsemen’?

Romanos Terzis

 4.    Anthrax - For All Kings

“For All Kings” carries on really where “Worship Music” stopped but it is enriched with some modern traces here and there while the pure thrash moments are considerably fewer in number. The albums opens with quite possible the best cut which is called “You Gotta Believe” and it reminds of the good old days. This is classic Anthrax at its very best. The follow up “Monster At The End” might not be of the same caliber or quality level but nevertheless is a remarkable moments which shows Anthrax borrowing influence by Disturbed (in the verse) and late Machine Head (at the chorus).

 5.    Testament - Brotherhood Of The Snake

Californians thrashers are back fiercely after an absence of four years. Modern relentless thrash metal and I have the impression that the degree of technical complexity has increased in the compositions, and this is easy to understand when in the lineup super players like DiGiorgio and Gene Hoglan are involved.

Konstantinos “2112” Konstantinou

 6.    Opeth – Sorceress

It would be bizarre, if an artist with such an array of influences and a taste as eclectic as Mikael Åkerfeldt’s would keep on making the same type of music, insisting, among other things, on singing in a very specific and restrictive style. Furthermore, no one could ever accuse him of not having explored or evolved the irresistible progressive – death metal combination that made Opeth famous, in the fullest degree.

Romanos Terzis

 7.    Innerwish- “Innerwish”

It is a complete work with a perfectly clean and "full" production.  "InnerWish" follows the classic stamp/sound that the band has outlined throughout the years and manages to "walk" into new territories such is heavier style and Epic tunes. My personal opinion, is that the band has made the correct choice with Giorgos as his voice matched the bands' new musical direction.

Jason Kasioptas

 8.    Avantasia – Ghostlights

Every time Tobias Sammet gets ready to unleash a new studio album with Avantasia, there is naturally a buzz in the metal community as it’s not that often nowadays to be treated with such prestigious releases that feature a parade of special guest stars.

Sakis Nikas

 9.    Gojira – Magma

After 2012’s amazing ‘L’Enfant Sauvage’, brothers Duplantier took their time, and, now living in Brooklyn, searched – and found as it turns out – the way to make their music a little more accessible without sacrificing its particularities. Their mother passed away during the writing process for the new record, and this has given an even more powerful sentimental substance to ‘Magma’.

Romanos Terzis

 10.    Helstar - Vampiro

Helstar’s trademark power/thrash outbursts are wonderfully blended with a technical atmosphere that is not tiring at all and takes “Vampiro” to another, higher level! The presence of two new members –Andrew Atwood on guitar and Garrick Smith on bass- has breathed new air to the band while Helstar’s founders Larry Barragan and James Rivera are having the time of their life with the latter being right at home with the whole vampire theme of the album.

Greek melodic metallers Innerwish released a new music video for “Machines Of Fear” from their latest studio album “InnerWish”. The video was filmed during the band’s performance for Greek Metal Hammer’s live party at Fuzz Club in Athens on December 26th, 2015. The album was mixed by Fredrik Nordstrom and Henrikk Udd at Studio Freeman and mastered by Peter In De Betou, while the artwork was created by Felipe Machado Franco.

I had to visit the area of Malakasa to watch the festival since 2012. It's been a long time and I have a lot of memories. The first time was in 1999 and as years passed by I saw almost all the big names of the metal scene at this festival. Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Saxon, Megadeth, Metallica, Manowar, Savatage, Nightwish and others.

Strong comeback from the Greek melodic metallers INNERWISH! Album mixed at Studio Fredman [In Flames, Dimmu Borgir, Hammerfall] and mastered by Peter In De Betou [Arch Enemy, Opeth, Amon Amarth]. Cover artwork by Felipe Machado Franco [Blind Guardian, Rhapsody of Fire, Xandria] and design by Jan Yrlund [Delain, Apocalyptica, Korpiklaani].

InnerWish biography
The story of INNERWISH began in 1995, in Athens, Greece and in their 20 years of existence they managed not only to be one of the most important metal bands from Greece, but also establishing themselves as a respectful band in the European melodic metal scene.
In 1998 they released their debut album “Waiting For The Dawn” through NMC Records, followed by a split CD together with their friends Reflection, entitled “Realms Of The Night” in 2001, through the same label.
Their second full-length album “Silent Faces” was released in 2004 through the famous German label Limb Music and so was their third album “Inner Strength”, in 2006. The response for both albums was very encouraging, especially in Europe and Japan. Sharing the stage with bands like JUDAS PRIEST, HELLOWEEN, U.D.O., THERION, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, WITHIN TEMPTATION, MANOWAR, RHAPSODY, ORPHANED LAND, OPETH, and BRAINSTORM among others in shows all over Europe and in Greece helped spreading the INNERWISH name.
In 2008 INNERWISH entered the Devasoundz Studios in Athens, Greece and recorded their fourth album “No Turning Back”. The album was mixed by Fredrik Nordstrom and Henrik Udd at Studio Fredman in Sweden and was mastered by Mika Jussila at Finnvox Studios in Finland.
The quest for a new record label ended when they signed with the Swedish label Ulterium Records and “No Turning Back” was released in 2010. This album was their best album at the time and helped them reach new horizons and widen their name even more.
While things seemed to be perfect in the INNERWISH camp, two member changes made the band postpone many of their plans. First their long-time drummer Terry Moros was replaced by Fragiskos Samoilis at the end of 2010. And then in 2011, their also long-time singer Babis Alexandropoulos had to leave in order to focus in his career as a tenor in classical singing. INNERWISH decided to not search for a new singer but to focus on the song-writing for their next album. After various obstacles in their way, finally in 2013, they announced their new singer George Eikosipentakis.
The first two samples of the new INNERWISH lineup were two cover songs the band made. The first one was BLACK SABBATH’s classic opus “Neon Knights” for a compilation put together by Metal Hammer Greece and the other one was WARLORD’s renown tune “Black Mass” for the compilation “Sons of a dream – A tribute to the Majesty of Warlord” which was released by Metal Breed Records USA.
After these two covers everything was set and the engines started working at full speed! After many months, sleepless nights and hard work, INNERWISH finally entered the Devasoundz Studios in Athens, Greece in August 2015 and started the recordings for their long-awaited fifth full-length album. The band trusted the famous duo of Fredrik Nordstrom and Henrik Udd at Studio Fredman in Sweden to do the mixing of the new album again. This time though, the mastering was done by the also famous Peter In De Betou at Tailor Made Production, also in Sweden.
The result is the best album the band has released so far. Simply entitled “InnerWish”, this fifth brainchild presents INNERWISH in the best phase of their musical career. With a solid like never before lineup, a fresh sound and a nice variety of songs, the album also includes some new elements, mixed together with the classic INNERWISH sound of course. Full of energy, power and emotion, this album is the appropriate way to describe what INNERWISH is all about. And that’s the reason why the album is simply called "InnerWish". The album includes 13 songs that will grab you and despite its 67 minutes of total playing time, won’t bore you at all!
The cover of the album was created by no other than Felipe Machado Franco, while the design was done by the renown Jan Yrlund of Darkgrove Design.
Don’t miss out on one of the most diverse and powerful melodic metal releases of 2016!

Στο studio μπήκαν οι Innerwish ξεκινώντας τις ηχογραφήσεις του καινούργιου, άτιτλου για την ώρα, άλμπουμ τους,

We had the pleasure and honor of attending the listening session of the new, self titled album by Innerwish that is expected to be released on the 18th of March by the Swedish label Ulterium Records. We found ourselves, together with many friends and colleagues, at the familiar Devasoundz Studios for a first “taste” from the fifth recording effort by the Greek metallers. As you can easily reckon, this is not a review of the album (as we only got to listen to it only once) thus you should wait for a full detailed presentation in the coming weeks.

What we can state right now is that the boys have delivered the goods. It is more than evident that they have worked tirelessly on the new album by recording 13 brand new tracks that bear various and diverse sonic elements. I’d say that this is an album for everyone. So, the old school fans will love the majestic tracks “Needles In My Mind” and “My World On Fire” while the younger ones will definitely dig such songs as “Rain Of A Thousand Years”, “Broken” and “Roll The Dice”. The vast difference this time around is the modern approach on the production department, an area that is so much neglected by the majority of the Greek bands.

The new members, Fragiskos Samoilis on the drums and George Eikosipentakis on vocals have done an excellent job (as a matter of fact, Samoilis has immensely contributed on the lyrics and music of the album). As for the veteran members, well it goes without saying that they had done a flawless job especially on the guitars where Krikos and Tsigos are really impressive.

Last but certainly not least we should make a special reference to the closing song “Tame The Seven Seas”. This must be the most ambitious and multidimensional composition of Innerwish’s career. Its cinematic atmosphere is wonderfully enriched by the very sensitive lyrics of this epic/symphonic opus but –as we said earlier- more details coming up soon. The first taste was more than positive…that’s for sure!
