In just 20 days we had the chance to see live on stage two former singers of Rainbow and the sentiments were totally opposite. On the one hand, there was Joe Lynn Turner who has clearly turned his back on his illustrious past as he chooses to play mostly cover tunes and on the other hand we can honestly say and be extremely proud that we are lucky to see Graham Bonnet live for the very first time on Greek soil! Trust me when I am saying and this is not an exaggeration at all, that even the most die hard fan of Rainbow or Bonnet didn’t expect such an explosive performance by the legendary vocalist and his band! Let’s go and see some of the highlight of the evening…

Graham Bonnet and Italian guitarist Dario Mollo will work together in a new project, Electric Zoo, whose debut album “Feeding The Beast” will be released on June 2nd by Ear Music. This collaboration goes way back in 2001 when the two of them toured with Don Airey on keyboards and Thunder’s Harry James and Chris Childs manning the rhythm section. There were three Rainbow songs recorded with this lineup. Later, in 2007 Mollo sent some demos to Bonnet, but due to other commitments they didn’t proceed.

"In 2007, I decided to record a new album with Graham and we started to write new material”, says Mollo. “This process took a very long time because I was very busy with my projects with Glenn Hughes (Voodoo Hill) and Tony Martin (The Cage) and Graham was busy too. A while ago, I received a call from Graham's manager telling me that he had listened to some of the demo songs and that it would have been criminal to not release this awesome material. We decided to add new songs and we recorded the now renamed EZOO album with some members from the Electric Zoo band, Roberto Gualdi on drums (of Italian prog legends PFM), Guido Block on bass and backing vocals on the Rainbow songs and a new keyboards and bass player (Dario Patti) for the rest of the album."

As a special treat, "Feeding The Beast" contains new versions of Rainbow classics "Eyes Of The World" and "Since You Been Gone" (written by Russ Ballard).

Joey Tafolla is the new guitarist in Graham Bonnet’s band, who will play on tour and record the new studio album. “It's great to have Joey with us. He brings us even closer to the classic sound of my past records in the live setting and he will be a great asset as we move into the new recordings which will certainly follow the path of what we began with 'The Book’”, says Bonnet. Tafolla started his career playing in Jag Panzer and also recorded several instrumental albums for Shrapnel Records which was responsible for breaking such great players as Paul Gilbert, Tony McAlpine, Yngwie Malmsteen and Richie Kotzen among others.

Graham Bonnet

Published in Interviews

Just a few hours before Graham Bonnet’s outstanding performance at the Crow Club last April RockpagesTV had the chance to talk with the great frontman. Despite being tired, sleepless and with a tight schedule to follow the singer is humorous, talkative and really enjoyable to talk to.

Graham Bonnet says that he is not interested in hearing Ritchie Blackmore's revamped version of RAINBOW because the band doesn't include any of the other musicians who were originally part of the group.
Blackmore performed RAINBOW and DEEP PURPLE material at three shows this past June. He was joined at the gigs by LORDS OF BLACK singer Ronnie Romero, STRATOVARIUS keyboardist Jens Johansson, BLACKMORE'S NIGHT drummer David Keith and bassist Bob Nouveau (a.k.a. Robert "Bob" Curiano, ex-BLACKMORE'S NIGHT).
Asked by Metal Express Radio if he had a chance to attend any of the RAINBOW shows this past summer, Bonnet said: "No. To be honest with you, I'm not really interested. It sounds a bit dumb and horrible, but I'm not interested in what Ritchie's doing."
He continued: "If he wants to get RAINBOW, or some of RAINBOW, back together, he should invite some of the original players from the RAINBOW lineup I was in. It should be somebody like Don Airey [on keyboards] and probably Roger Glover playing bass to give the people what they sort of remember from the '80s. At the moment, that was… To me, it looked like a session band. So I didn't listen to it. I thought, 'Is he kidding?'"

In a recent interview with MetalTalk, singer Graham Bonnet seemed regretful about his behavior that led to leave Rainbow in 1980. Bonnet was asked whether it’s true that he recorded the band’s super hit “I Surrender” before quitting and he replied: "I started to record it, yeah. I did some backing vocals and quit after the backing vocals were done, because we had nothing else. And I looked at Roger Glover, and I said, 'What else are you gonna do? I've done backing vocals. What else have you got?' 'We have nothing.' So I went back to L.A. And then they called me up a little bit later to say, 'We've got some more songs now.' I said, 'What's the point of me coming back now?' I said, 'I've decided to do something different.' [And they said] 'Well, look, if we get another singer in to do some of the songs you don't wanna do, we'll get somebody else to do those and you do what you wanna do, the songs you like.' And I said, 'No. That won't work — two singers.' So I just quit, believe it or not. What an idiot… I'm kicking myself now, because I should have stayed a bit longer. And I apologized for that to the band." Asked if he regrets leaving Rainbow, Bonnet said: "Yeah, absolutely. 'Cause I was probably a bit too… My ego was taking me somewhere else. I was a bit too cocky. But in the end, it worked out okay." The singer released a new album recently titled “The Book” and a new video was published a few days ago for the song “The Rider”

Sweden Rock 2016

Published in Live Reports

June 8-11, 2016, Norje, Sweden: Approaching Norje, it feels that time has not gone by at all and you were actually here yesterday, instead of one year ago. Same shops, same gates, same stages. And then you start to meet the people you know and the people you met before and it starts feeling like… you know… home! Although the first day is always lower in attendance, so you always have this feeling before the party is about to start and you wait for the first guests.
