I must not and will not miss any Alice Cooper European tour. Not only because he’s been one of my teenage idols; further because, during this last decade even more, he’s presenting a unique and so personal show, bolstering the image of a man with no intention to get old. I’m inside the amazing Hammersmith (now “Hmv Apollo”) and Man Raze open for Alice; A very interesting project by Phil Collen (Def Leppard), Paul Cook (Sex Pistols) and Simon Laffy (ex – Girl), presenting their debut album, called “Surreal”. They played for about forty minutes; the trio shows a massive binding, assisted by the perfect sounding of this historic hall. “Hallo”, “Connected To You”, “Spinning Out” and “Turn It Up “, the closure, were some of the songs performed by Man Raze.
Then it was time for “The Alice Cooper Show”, as I love to call it. The scenery is completely different this time with hanging huge letters, supported by nets, spelling “Alice”. As for the band, it’s the same one over the years, with Damon Johnson and Keri Kelli on guitars, Chuck Garric on bass, and the mighty “new” Jimmy DeGrasso on drums. I believe that this show is the best, second only to the “Brutally Live Tour” in 2000/2001. Lots of things happen on stage. It’s one of the richest shows ever presented up to date! Alice dies with every torturing mean there is. The guillotine (Ballad Of Dwight Fry), he’s being hanged, (I Never Cry) the “iron maiden” (Killer), two gigantic needles send him... away on “Poison”; he keeps on changing impressive costumes, yet what’s the most impressive thing of all is the way that Alice Cooper illustrates human paranoia, as the common concept factor on his show for over than 90 minutes,. This time the actors on stage are much more than we are used to.
“Theatre Of Death Tour” does not support a new album, the set list was a best-of, and one of the best I’ve ever seen. A new introduction to the show is the fact that “School's Out” was the opening as well as the closing song. He “trusted” “Nurse Rosetta” again, whilst I consider as bull’s eye the selections of “The Awakening” and “Guilty”; only a few of his classics were missing. I like the fact that he supports his latest songs (sonically and visually), “Dirty Diamonds” and “Vengeance Is Mine”, from these two albums respectively.
Alice Cooper’s show deserves an A plus. An A plus is surely going to the Hammersmith Odeon (sorry lads, I’m used to call it this way), the best music hall I’ve seen in Europe, visually and acoustically; the sound is like a punch in the stomach. Definitely, an A plus goes to the fifteen members of the Greek Cooperman fan club, which also were there.
